Stratford Gala Raises $30,000 for Animal Care
75 animals now under the care of the Stratford-Perth Humane Society have something to smile about this morning.
With generous support from Vic Haytor and the Arden Park Hotel, a small team of dedicated women hosted the annual Best In Show on November and raised almost $30,000 for animal care at SPHS.
Best In Show brings out the best in the Stratford community. From local automobile dealerships to shelter volunteers, individuals and businesses alike pull together to raise much needed funds for the Humane Society. Every year, the shelter on Douro Street takes in more than 650 animals – dogs, puppies, cats, kittens, and sundry small pets. With new protocols in place, the shelter has adopted out more than 90% of the animals it has received to date. More animals means more resources – financial, human, and time have all been allocated to ensuring every adoptable pet finds a forever home.
The volunteer team of Valerie Thompson, Jill Mason, Roberta and Laura Vandenberg, Nancy Culliton and Elizabeth Kerr begin work in early spring to rally support. Stratford’s media lend a hand by donating space and airtime to the event. Local merchants come on board with auction prizes and in- kind donations. It is indeed a community-wide event with community-wide support.
In July 2012, the OSPCA Branch for Stratford-Perth merged with the Kitchener-Waterloo and North Waterloo Humane Society to form the Animal Welfare Agency of South Central Ontario (AWASCO). This move created efficiencies in operations while enhancing the ability of each agency to provide care for its animals. Partnering with the YMCA, the SPHS offered its first formal children’s day camp this past August, attracting more than 30 chidren.
